Then we should notice the conflict Jesus faces (4:1–2). It is worth noting the intensity of Jesus’ temptation. I take ‘forty days’ in verse 2a with the participle ‘being tempted’—‘for forty days being tempted by the devil.’ There was a continuing barrage of temptation for forty days; then verse 2b introduces the climactic temptations that come near the end of that period (vv. 2b–13). Clearly, there weren’t merely three specific temptations; there was an ongoing ordeal of temptation. One can’t say
